Who We Are

NSF SOARS is primarily funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and is housed within the UCAR Center for Science Education, part of UCAR Community Programs (UCP). UCP is managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), a nonprofit consortium of more than 129 North American colleges and universities dedicated to advancing Earth system science (ESS). Through UCAR, NSF SOARS works closely with the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) to support student development and program deliverables.

Staff and Steering Committee 

The NSF SOARS team is led by the program lead, with part-time support from several other staff members throughout the year. The program is also advised by a Steering Committee of NSF SOARS alumni and ESS community members. 

Proteges 

NSF SOARS Proteges are invited to return for up to three summers after their first summer, for a maximum of four summer-long research visits to Boulder. Visits do not have to be consecutive, though Proteges must remain a registered student to be eligible. 

Alumni 

NSF SOARS has had over 275 participants since its inception in 1996.
